چکیده

We report here on the observation and offline detection of the weak tsunamis generated by earthquakes near Indonesia on 11 April 2012 using radar systems and tide gauges on the coasts of Sumatra and the Andaman Islands. This work extends the previous observations of the much stronger 2011 Japan tsunami. The distance offshore at which the tsunami can be detected, and hence the warning time provided, depends primarily on the bathymetry: the wider the shallow continental shelf, the greater this time. The weak Indonesia tsunamis were detected successfully in spite of the narrow shallow-water shelf offshore from the radar systems. Larger tsunamis could obviously be detected further from the coast. This paper provides further confirmation that radar is an important tool to aid in tsunami observation and warning. OPEN ACCESS Remote Sens. 2012, 4 2945

Tsunami Arrival Detection with High Frequency (HF) Radar

Quantitative real-time observations of a tsunami have been limited to deep-water, pressure-sensor observations of changes in the sea surface elevation and observations of sea level fluctuations at the coast, which are essentially point measurements. Constrained by these data, models have been used for predictions and warning of the arrival of a tsunami, but to date no system exists for local de...

Processing Technique of HF Radar Signals for the Disaster Warning and Tsunami Detection

High-frequency (HF) surface wave radars provide a unique capability to detect targets far beyond the conventional microwave radar coverage. This capability also could contribute to the development and improvement of Tsunami Early Warning Systems. This paper presents the system design and introduces the key signal processing methodologies that enable the HF radar to provide early warning of the ...

Possibility of Tsunami Detection Using HF Radar WERA

High-frequency (HF) surface wave radars provide a unique capability to detect targets far beyond the conventional microwave radar coverage but also could contribute to the development and improvement of Tsunami Early Warning Systems. This paper describes the simulation of tsunami related signatures observed by HF radar at long ranges in case of a tsunami travelling towards the coast. A tsunami ...

Algorithms for tsunami detection by High Frequency Radar : development and case studies for tsunami impact in British Columbia, Canada

A shore-based High-Frequency (HF) WERA radar was recently installed by Ocean Networks Canada (ONC) near Tofino, British Columbia (Canada), to mitigate the elevated tsunami hazard along the shores of Vancouver Island, from both farand near-field seismic sources and, in particular, from the Cascadia Subduction Zone (CSZ). With this HF radar, ocean currents can be measured up to a 70-85 km range, ...
